Kristin is 23 years old. She grew up in the foster care system, moving in and out of foster and group homes until she ran away at age 17.
At 19 Kristin found out she was pregnant. At the time she was without stable housing to raise her child Jayden. DCFS removed him from her care. Kristin moved to Venice from San Bernardino, was unable to find stable housing and began sleeping on the beach. Kirstin connected with Safe Place for Youth and over time developed a rapport and trust.
Kristin began working intensely with her SPY case manger and the Department of Mental Health, with the goal to regain custody of Jayden. Kristin began taking all the necessary steps outlined by DCFS and in March moved into the Independent Living Program at the Dream Center. She was involved with their on-site programs and started a job with Save the Children
Kristin had a final Family Court hearing scheduled for June whereby custody of Jayden was to be determined. Unfortunately, she was never able to regain custody as Jayden had passed away in May from natural causes. He was 4 years old.
Kristin’s spirit remains resilient and she is still living at the dream center. She continues to participate in case management, counseling and is focusing on obtaining her GED.
